Fasting blood sugar test

The blood sugar level measured in early morning or after 12 hours of fasting is called fasting blood sugar. It is measured on empty stomach. The fasting blood sugar is important as it shows the overall control of sugar during the previous day.

The simplest measurement of blood glucose performed by most physicians as part of screening health panels is the fasting blood sugar (or glucose) test.
Fasting glucose levels of 60-99 mg/dl are generally regarded as normal, considered optimal levels to be 60-80. Fasting blood sugar of 80-99 is considered as high normal. A fasting blood sugar greater than 125 mg/dl (5.0 mmol/L) on two occasions in diagnostic of diabetes mellitus.

Anyone whose fasting blood-sugar level is over 120 has a real problem and needs to see a doctor. Those whose blood sugar is in between 110 to 120 are marginal and should take steps quickly to change their lifestyle.
