What is ketoacidosis?

This condition is characterized by the over-acidity of the blood due to the accumulation of ketone acids. The respiration rate is increased as the body attempts to reduce the acidity of the blood by getting rid of carbon dioxide.

Ketoacids are organic compounds that contain a carboxylic acid group and a ketone group. Ketoacidosis develops in type I diabetes. Blood glucose levels rise to 300-600 mg/dl. Since the cells are unable to use glucose for fuel, the body stars to break down fat to produce ketoacids.

When ketoacid levels rise, the blood becomes acidic, which impairs enzymatic reactions throughout the body.

If progressive, ketoacidosis can result in numerous metabolic problems and diabetic coma or even death.

Ketoacidosis usually develops slowly. The symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis include fruity breath, disorientation, abdominal tenderness, excessive urination and thirst, hyperventilation and signs of dehydration.
